Thursday thoughts are a series to share my random thoughts with my readers so that they well get to know me a bit more. We all have a different outlook on life, feelings, emotions, and sense of humor. My Thursday thoughts series is just for fun, sharing, and to make you think of things yourself. 

MyThursday thoughts…

  1. Looking for the good in every situation no matter how bad things are helps with not having a ball of anxiety in your gut all day, get a good night’s sleep, and keeps you from being an angry witch. This positivity thing has made life flow much nicer.
  2. Way too many beautiful women are in love with worthless losers. These women need to search for the beauty within themselves; this way, they can be so confident, that pretty words without actions backing them up don’t even phase them.
  3. The more you grow as a person and know who you are, the more you will see who your friends are. The circle shrinks and that’s ok.
  4. Doing something you love makes you a happier person.
  5. Procrastinating on goals because of fear is just wasted time.
  6. Seems like cooler weather makes people more touchy feely. More hugs to go around, no complaints on that, who doesn’t like hugs?
  7. We won’t see the Pumpkin Spice Latte till next year, but the Caramel Brulee Latte is here! I actually had a venti this morning. Yum!
  8. Thanksgiving is almost here…double yum!
  9. I say I’m going to start Christmas shopping early every year and never follow through. I shop better under pressure, I guess…Ha ha!
  10. I’m super excited to finally see Doyle Bramhall II in concert. Texas Blues always make we want to drink beer. Texas beer too! (Shiner Bock Shout Out!)
  11. Speaking of spirits…I think it’s time for a winery visit. Nothing like a warm Merlot to warm your tummy.
  12. When you are near 40, you start noticing the fines lines more than the wrinkles.
  13. My mom is so much cooler now that I’m older…and my dad…well, he’s always been cool.
  14. Good friends will tell you the truth, even if it’s bad or you don’t really want to hear it.
  15. It’s hard to imagine how cold it is outside today when you’re sitting in a warm, cozy room filled with aromatherapy.

These are my Thursday Thoughts…to think it’s only 2:15pm and all these things have popped in my head. Amazing how the mind works. Sucky Step Parents

I always tell my friends its not easy being a stepmom. But let’s be honest, being a step parent is far from easy! Though there may be many struggles and hurdles when being a step parent, there are things that you need to keep in mind to better your situation, whatever it may be. Don’t be a sucky step parent, embrace that with the love of your spouse, along came a bonus of blessings in your step children.Your step children will have inner and outer traits of your spouse, how can you now want to love them? In my opinion, step parents are bonus parents for children and put in their lives to give them extra childhood memories and more love.

Drama

Drama flares up when people are jealous, still have harsh feelings, are control freaks, and make decisions that benefit themselves instead of the children. You have to learn how to pick and choose your battles. Is something really worth arguing about and exchanging harsh words over when it’s out of your control and just going to distance your step child from you? I think not. If it’s something petty that is crawling under your skin, blow it off, it’s not worth upsetting all parties involved or being upset over it yourself. Also, never involve children in any arguments or try to pin them against parents or step parents. Every time you involve children in arguments, it robs them from childhood time and exposes them to adult issues that they may not understand and be too much to handle.

Give Credit

So you may or may not like your spouse’s ex, but, your stepchild has wonderful manners, grades, always respectful, and says great things about their other parent. They are obviously doing something right, so before you decide to hate on your spouse’s ex for immature reasons think of those things. Giving credit works both ways too. If you are the custodial parent and your children love your ex’s new spouse, don’t be jealous, and be thankful! Would you rather they treat your child like dirt? If you are blessed with your child having great step parents, being appreciative of them and giving a simple thank you would mean so much. Not all blended families are that lucky.

Sharing things

Sharing the child’s things between the two families is often a touchy subject. What’s the point in fighting over clothes and toys when they don’t belong to you, your spouse, or your spouse’s ex and belong to the child? Be mature and don’t argue over material things. If something holds sentimental value that you purchased, then that’s a different story and it may just take some simple explaining to the other parent(s) and/or children.

Family ties

When you marry someone with children, they are a package deal; even more so if your spouse has full custody. The children involved have no choice in picking their step parents. You have to keep in mind that their lives were completely different prior to you and some may still even be going through a rough time accepting the divorce. Be patient and understanding with your step children; all good solid relationships take those two things the most.

Be Fair

If both your spouse and you have children, keep in mind that after you get married, all children are YOUR children together. Not one of them should get any special treatment over the other. They should all be loved, supported equally, and taken care of all the same. That should go for discipline as well. Everything being fair in the household also teaches your children respect authority and to treat all walks of life with kindness.

Show some respect

Whether you like your spouse’s ex or not, that is who they had children with. They will always be in your life as long as you are with your spouse. Be civil and respectful; keep the best interests of the children in mind, and be a good example to them. Even if the other party doesn’t meet you halfway, at least in the children’s eyes you are the bigger person. It’s not that hard to do.

Communication

Good communication=good step children. Always keep positive when dealing with negative people because positivity always wins. If your spouse’s ex is constantly trying to create some sort of drama and you are doing just the opposite, it gets noticed by the children. Don’t stoop to a low level; be the bigger person, it’s so much better for the relationship with your step children, your spouse, and yourself.

In closing

Every blended family is different. All we can do as step parents is be a good influence in our step children’s lives by consistently being the positive reinforcement. Challenging yes, worth it definitely.

Beauty Remedies with Oatmeal

October 29 is National Oatmeal Day! Oatmeal has long been a favorite breakfast dish and is meal that is not only a quick hunger fix, but is also full of wonderful health benefits. Oats provide a good source of fiber and are a great way to lower one’s blood cholesterol. Oatmeal is also recognized by the Food and Drug Administration as a food that may reduce the risk of heart disease in combination with a normal low-fat eating regimen. If you think that oatmeal is a popular dish in the United States, you will be surprised to learn that it has a number of long traditions in other countries. In Scotland, oatmeal has been a popular grain option for many years because oats are easier to grow than wheat particularly in light of the area’s short wet growing seasons. Traditionally, the Scots grind the oats into a coarse powder, separating it into different batches depending on the coarseness. The ground oats are then used in dishes such as porridge, brose, gruel, skirlie and haggis, as well as a number of other popular applications. In Switzerland, oatmeal is used in a popular cold breakfast dish called Muesli, where the oats are combined with milk, honey and other spices, refrigerated overnight and eaten the next day with nuts and fruits added to the dish. In the United States, Vermont has the biggest connection to oats and oatmeal due to the large number of Scottish settlers that came to the state. Today, Vermont is the leading state in per capita consumption of oatmeal. Whether you like your oats in a cookie, a smoothie or in a plain old batch of oatmeal with apples and cinnamon, give thanks to oatmeal on its national day.

Oatmeal is very beneficial for your skin. it is one of the best natural treatments for dry skin. It can also act as natural skin cleanser, facial scrub and soothing facial mask.

1.  It is anti-inflammatory. So, if you have redness along with dry and itchy skin, this could be your new best friend as it reduces redness and makes the complexion more toned and even.

Face Masks Of Oatmeal:

Here are few simple ways in which you can prepare face masks using oatmeal and apply them regularly on your face:

Deep Cleansing Face Mask:

Mix 1 tablespoon of finely grounded oatmeal with 1 tablespoon of live organic yogurt and 1 small spoon of honey. Just beat the mixture until it becomes consistent enough to spread all over. If you warm the honey it will give more consistency to the mixture. Apply the mixture on a clean face and leave it on for  10- 15 minutes. Then wash it off with warm water and see the results.

Honey And Oatmeal Face Mask:

Mix 1 teaspoon olive oil, 1 egg yolk, 1 teaspoon honey and 1 teaspoon instant oatmeal. Blend all these ingredients to make them consistent. Apply the mixture to  your face and leave it on for a few minutes. Rinse it off with luke warm water.

Oatmeal And Egg White Mask:

Mix oatmeal with one  egg white. Blend well and then apply to your face. Leave it on until it dries, which should take about 15  15 minutes. Then wash it off with warm water.

Scrubs
Oat flour can be used in face and body scrubs to buff your face for a clean, soft finish. Here’s a few real easy ones:

Mild face scrub
Mix 1 part oatmeal flour with 1 part carrier oil (such as olive), wash off with warm water. Finish with some oat milk toner.

Oatmeal body scrub
Mix equal parts of olive oil and sugar with a bit of a carrier oil. Use as a body scrub instead of soap, wash with warm water. You’ll probably not need to moisturize after using this scrub.

Dry shampoo
If you have blonde hair, ground oats is a fantastic dry shampoo. Just rub some over your scalp, and brush excess oats out with a boar bristle brush.

Oat bran bath
Put about 1 dl (0.5 cup) of oat groans or rolled oats in some cloth and tie it up to make a small bag. Put this in your bath tub or in your foot bath. Press the bag a bit until the oatmeal “milk” comes out. You can also use this bag instead of soap on your body or face. It will give a light scrubbing and cleanse your skin and pores.

I  know this looks like a Thanksgiving pie recipe at first glance, but we promise this yummy beauty recipe feeds your face, not your mouth. The pumpkin and cinnamon invigorate and exfoliate, while the honey acts as a humectant. First, combine all of your primary ingredients in a small bowl. Then, if you wish, add heavy whipping cream, cranberry juice, or apple cider vinegar depending on your complexion. Blend the mixture gently, and then apply a thin layer of it onto your face, avoiding the eye area. Relax for 15 minutes as you enjoy the amazing aroma wafting from your skin. Wash off with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Pureed Pumpkin Scrub

1/4 cup cooked pumpkin puree
1/4 cup brown sugar

The enzymes in this simple and delicious sugar scrub will slough dead winter skin off your body. Combine your ingredients in a small bowl, and then apply the mixture to your body in the shower. Scrub your skin gently in circular motions, and rinse off with warm water.

Pumpkin Pedicure

1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1 raw egg
1/2 tsp raw honey
Plastic wrap

Soften dry, cracked feet with this natural enzymatic concoction. Mix the ingredients together in a small bowl and apply to clean feet. Wrap your feet with clear plastic wrap and let your tootsies marinate for 15 minutes (don’t forget to wrap in between your toes!). After time is up, rinse with lukewarm water and slather feet with your favorite foot cream.

Pumpkin Body Scrub:

1/2 Cup- Cooked Pumpkin
1/2 Cup- Brown Sugar
1/2 Teaspoon- Cinnamon

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl and stir. It’s a good idea to lay out some newspapers on your bathroom floor because this could get messy. Take your mixture and massage into your skin for 10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and your skin will be exfoliated, healthy and glowing!

Pumpkin Face Masque:

3 Tablespoons of cooked or canned Pumpkin
1 Teaspoon of Honey
1/4 Teaspoon of Milk

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and massage into your face. Let sit for 15 minutes and rinse off with warm water. Wash your face with your normal cleanser, if needed.

Halloween Beauty Tips; Before & After

Halloween is almost here! My favorite holiday! As much fun as it is getting into costume, things like heavy costume makeup and wearing masks can affect your hair and skin. Here are some beauty tips for the Halloween season.

Protect your skin: If you will be using a product you’ve never tried before, think ahead. Check to make sure that you aren’t sensitive to its pigments, fragrance, or adhesive by applying a small amount of the product to the back of your hand, the wrist, or the inside bend of your elbow. If you aren’t itching or breaking out after a few hours have passed, it’s probably okay. If you do experience a problem, wash the product off immediately and find something else that will give you the look you want. If you will be using a latex product to produce special effects (scars, wounds, etc.), it is particularly important to test for sensitivity. Theatrical-quality liquid latex is FDA-approved for use on the skin, but be cautious about other liquid latex products—if the label doesn’t say it’s skin-safe, it isn’t. As always, use a mild cleanser to remove dirt and oil from the face before applying makeup. If you are using latex or a Halloween makeup kit, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or a heavy moisturizer as a protective barrier between your skin and the product. Glitter on your face part of your costume? Do not apply it anywhere near the eyes—no matter what kind of adhesive you use, some of that glitter is going to fall off.

Blemishes/Oily Skin: Whether you opt for heavy, oil-based face paint layered over your complexion, a pore-clogging rubber costume mask or the surge in sugary treats in your diet, there are many possible triggers for an acne outbreak during the Halloween season. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, it’s a good idea to skip the oily face makeup altogether. But, if you do decide to use it, be sure that you don’t leave it on for too long and definitely don’t go to sleep before you thoroughly cleanse your skin of every last trace. And while Halloween is the season to indulge in a few extra sugary sweets, don’t go too overboard. To ensure that your skin and hair are getting the nutrition they need, balance the candy with a few extra fruits and veggies. To achieve that ghostly pale face without the heavy costume makeup, look for the fairest shade of a water-based foundation that you can find.

Blisters: It’s necessary to compromise when it comes to picking the perfect shoes for your Halloween costume. From sky-high platform heels that you borrowed from a friend or lace-up black boots that are just a teeny bit to small, you may find yourself with sore, aching feet and bulging blisters before the night is over. Prevent blisters before they form by layering your feet with petroleum jelly, baby powder or Band-Aids to reduce the friction that causes blisters to form in the first place. And, consider slipping a pair of flip-flops or flats in your purse, just in case your Halloween shoes have you hobbling in pain.

Allergic reactions: From glitter and face paint to rubber masks and expired cosmetics, Halloween can expose your skin to lots of triggers for irritation, causing rashes, inflammation, itching and more. While those with sensitive skin are especially susceptible to irritations, everyone should be on alert with Halloween cosmetics. When it’s time to paint your face for Halloween, it’s tempting to dig out the old neon eye shadows, outdated red lip colors and last year’s face paint from the bottom of your bathroom drawer. Before you start applying them, check expiration dates. If a package doesn’t have an expiration date, examine it for questionable odors and unusual consistencies, which may signal contamination. Toss aside any products that have gone bad; using them can trigger a reaction. *Always perform a patch test to determine if a product is safe for your skin. To do this, simply apply a bit of product to a hidden patch of skin – like behind your ear or along the inside of your arm – and allow it to dry. Examine the area for any signs of irritation, including redness, bumps or itchiness.

Irritated Peepers: Many Halloween costumes call for eye makeup that’s heavier than usual. Glitter, glow-in-the-dark paint and false lashes can leave your eyes irritated, itchy and uncomfortable. Prevent eye irritation with a few easy tips. Eye-saving solutions: Avoid applying costume makeup – including glitter and glow-in-the-dark paint – near the eyes, and always use products that are meant for the face. The glitter in your craft supplies probably contains harsh metallic materials that could damage the eyes. Also, use lots of caution when applying false lashes – especially if it’s not a normal part of your routine. Using too much glue can cause your real lashes to fall out when you remove the false ones. Remove them very gently, or better yet, skip them altogether. With all of the great mascaras on the market, you can create a dramatic eye without the potential pain and suffering.

Removing makeup: Your latex special effects can be peeled off. Gentle washing with soap and water should take care of any remaining latex, but do not use oily makeup removers. Heavier-than-usual regular makeup may require several applications of baby oil, cold cream, or the makeup removal product you typically use. Use a cotton ball to cleanse the delicate skin around the eyes. Rinse, repeat, but DON’T SCRUB, especially if your skin is sensitive! Rubbing can cause more irritation than the makeup. Many Halloween makeup kits sold at this time of year include a small supply of cold cream, because that’s what generally works on these products. If the makeup is oily, baby oil will remove it—oil adheres to oil. Again, don’t scrub! Most glitter will wash off in the shower (again, protect your eyes!). Any stubborn pieces can be peeled off with scotch tape. A thin application of shaving cream will remove fake blood.

 

Restore your skin: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. If your skin is on the drier side, use a hydrating mask before moisturizing, if oily use a clarifying mask.  A nice exfoliant will help keep breakouts at bay and ensure fresh and vibrant skin after Halloween make up application! (My favorite is a scrub by Nuskin.) Or better yet, getting a professional facial is the ideal way restore your skin and pampering it for autumn. **Enjoy your favorite candy treats while minimizing the effects on your skin. Sugar can aggravate acne, so here are some candy indulging tips: Eat dark chocolate peanut M&M’s instead of Jelly Beans because you get a little protein in the nuts. Choose Snickers over Milky Way for the same reason. Dark chocolate is less harmful than milk chocolate, since it is higher in sugar and contains dairy, & has been linked to acne. Hope this helps on your candy selecting!
