Beauty Remedies with Oatmeal

October 29 is National Oatmeal Day! Oatmeal has long been a favorite breakfast dish and is meal that is not only a quick hunger fix, but is also full of wonderful health benefits. Oats provide a good source of fiber and are a great way to lower one’s blood cholesterol. Oatmeal is also recognized by the Food and Drug Administration as a food that may reduce the risk of heart disease in combination with a normal low-fat eating regimen. If you think that oatmeal is a popular dish in the United States, you will be surprised to learn that it has a number of long traditions in other countries. In Scotland, oatmeal has been a popular grain option for many years because oats are easier to grow than wheat particularly in light of the area’s short wet growing seasons. Traditionally, the Scots grind the oats into a coarse powder, separating it into different batches depending on the coarseness. The ground oats are then used in dishes such as porridge, brose, gruel, skirlie and haggis, as well as a number of other popular applications. In Switzerland, oatmeal is used in a popular cold breakfast dish called Muesli, where the oats are combined with milk, honey and other spices, refrigerated overnight and eaten the next day with nuts and fruits added to the dish. In the United States, Vermont has the biggest connection to oats and oatmeal due to the large number of Scottish settlers that came to the state. Today, Vermont is the leading state in per capita consumption of oatmeal. Whether you like your oats in a cookie, a smoothie or in a plain old batch of oatmeal with apples and cinnamon, give thanks to oatmeal on its national day.

Oatmeal and Beauty

Most of us think of oatmeal as something we eat for breakfast, but it can also be used for facials or skin treatments. It is very beneficial for your skin. It cleanses your skin without irritating or drying it out. In addition it helps relieve any dryness you might be feeling and helps maintain the moisture content in your skin.

Benefits Of Oatmeal:

Oatmeal is very beneficial for your skin. it is one of the best natural treatments for dry skin. It can also act as natural skin cleanser, facial scrub and soothing facial mask.

1.  It is anti-inflammatory. So, if you have redness along with dry and itchy skin, this could be your new best friend as it reduces redness and makes the complexion more toned and even.
2.  It is truly all in one cleanser.  It cleans, moisturizes, soothes and protects the skin. It helps heal the skin after exposure to the sun. When used as a skin cleanser, it actually absorbs and removes surface dirt and impurities while providing very gentle exfoliation, leaving skin smooth, soft, and clean, without soap.
3.  For those with skin irritations that have been caused as a result of using other cosmetic products or have been exposed to chemicals present in some cleaning products, then you should consider using oatmeal. This natural treatment method is also useful for people who have excessively scrubbed their skin. It cleanses deep pores without drying out or irritating the skin.
4. Oatmeal baths are highly recommended to people with acne. This is because of the soothing properties of oatmeal that provide relief to your skin.

Face Masks Of Oatmeal:

Here are few simple ways in which you can prepare face masks using oatmeal and apply them regularly on your face:

Deep Cleansing Face Mask:

Mix 1 tablespoon of finely grounded oatmeal with 1 tablespoon of live organic yogurt and 1 small spoon of honey. Just beat the mixture until it becomes consistent enough to spread all over. If you warm the honey it will give more consistency to the mixture. Apply the mixture on a clean face and leave it on for  10- 15 minutes. Then wash it off with warm water and see the results.

Honey And Oatmeal Face Mask:

Mix 1 teaspoon olive oil, 1 egg yolk, 1 teaspoon honey and 1 teaspoon instant oatmeal. Blend all these ingredients to make them consistent. Apply the mixture to  your face and leave it on for a few minutes. Rinse it off with luke warm water.

Oatmeal And Egg White Mask:

Mix oatmeal with one  egg white. Blend well and then apply to your face. Leave it on until it dries, which should take about 15  15 minutes. Then wash it off with warm water.

Scrubs
Oat flour can be used in face and body scrubs to buff your face for a clean, soft finish. Here’s a few real easy ones:

Mild face scrub
Mix 1 part oatmeal flour with 1 part carrier oil (such as olive), wash off with warm water. Finish with some oat milk toner.

Oatmeal body scrub
Mix equal parts of olive oil and sugar with a bit of a carrier oil. Use as a body scrub instead of soap, wash with warm water. You’ll probably not need to moisturize after using this scrub.

Dry shampoo
If you have blonde hair, ground oats is a fantastic dry shampoo. Just rub some over your scalp, and brush excess oats out with a boar bristle brush.

Oat bran bath
Put about 1 dl (0.5 cup) of oat groans or rolled oats in some cloth and tie it up to make a small bag. Put this in your bath tub or in your foot bath. Press the bag a bit until the oatmeal “milk” comes out. You can also use this bag instead of soap on your body or face. It will give a light scrubbing and cleanse your skin and pores.

Morning Skin Care: Cleanse, Tone, & Moisturize

morning skin care regimenTaking care of our skin daily is the best way to keep looking fresh, fine lines from appearing and have smooth, soft skin. Having a daily skin care regimen doesn’t take long to do at all and is easy to incorporate with your daily everyday routine when getting ready in the morning. Not cleansing or taking care of your skin in the morning? Yes, I know…snooze about 3x, then off to work you go! Think of about it this way, during the night your pores accumulate natural oils and no telling what other debris. It could come from a soiled pillow case, your cell phone, or whatever else you put close to your face in the evening.
Cleansing: Each morning, if your face is not cleansed before applying skin care products or makeup, the oils and debris from the previous night will be covered. This could be the beginning of some very yucky skin problems. Every morning your face should be cleansed to prepare it for your moisturizer, sunblock, & make-up. Save time by keeping your cleanser in your shower.

Toning: After cleansing your face the pores are open. If left open, moisture can leave the skin, which leads to dehydrated skin.  Applying toner will also remove any other residues & help
close the pores to prep your skin for a moisturizer. Closed pores has another benefit, it stops dust & other air born particles from settling in the pores which can cause breakouts or blackheads. Have your toner set on your sink next to your brush, it’ll take about 15 seconds to apply it.
Moisturizing: Moisturizer leaves the skin feeling soft, smooth,  and helps minimize fine lines & dryness. Apply moisturizer after the toner, while your skin is still damp. Gently massage the moisturizer into your skin with smooth upward strokes. (great for your elasticity) Have extra-dry areas? Then use a little extra moisturizer in those spots. Think of your moisturizer as your primer before your makeup.

A morning skin care regimen is not time consuming at all, especially when you think of the great things it does for your skin. Simply keep your products by the things you use on a daily basis. Before you know it, it will all be part of your everyday regime! Remember…Cleanse…Tone…Moisturize!

DIY Sore Muscle Bath Recipes

I’ve noticed a bunch of social media posts from friends saying they were sore from running in marathons, 5ks, and hitting the gym a lot lately. Here are some easy remedies to help ease the soreness. Athletes and people with injuries use bath soaks for treating sore and strained muscles. For swollen or pulled muscles, prepare a cool or cold bath. For strained, tight muscles prepare a warm or hot bath. You can prepare a bath soak in your regular bathtub, but make sure the tub is clean to prevent infection, especially if you have any open cuts or wounds associated with your injury.

DIY Sore Muscle Soak:

Ingredients:

  • Epsom Salt
  • Measuring Cup
  • Water
  1.  Measure 2 cups of Epsom salt into a standard bathtub. Instructions on the package will provide dosage for smaller baths, bowls and foot-soaks.
  2.  Fill the tub with hot water, checking the temperature to make sure it is safe and comfortable for soaking in. Swish the water around to dissolve the Epsom salts.
  3. Soak the sore muscles or body in the Epsom salt bath for 15 minutes or so. The recommended minimum time is 12 minutes, three times each week; your Epsom salt package may provide additional timing for specific uses.

Herbal Baths

There are a thousand different ways you can take an herbal bath, and each of them are healing and relaxing. You don’t need to run out to the store for dried herbs to take a relaxing herbal bath, by the way. You already have perfect options in your kitchen cabinet right now:

  • Sage: Uplifting, calming and astringent – GREAT for people with oily skin or back acne
  • Rosemary: Relaxing and great for alertness, also astringent and clarifying
  • Peppermint: Energizing (or relaxing) and clarifying
  • Chamomile: Extremely, relaxing, and calming – perfect for dry or irritated skin
  • Green Tea: Energizing and mood stabilizing – also antioxidant, anti-aging, and very healing for any skin type
  • Lavender: Relaxing, calming, astringent, and clarifying

Of course, you could use things like rose petals, calendula, orange peels.

How to take an herbal bath:

While you could make little herbal bath bags, my new favorite way is to brew a very strong tea ahead of time using the herbs (and essential oils, if I want an extra kick). Brew 1-2 cups of very strong herbal tea. Strain and add it to your running bathwater. Then, take the remaining brewed herbs and place them in the middle of a washcloth. Gather the washcloth together at the top and tie tightly with a string or a hair tie. Leave it in the bath as you soak, and then scrub well with it before getting out of the tub.

Other ways Relieve Muscle Aches

  •  Use over-the-counter topical analgesic creams. Topical analgesic creams relieve minor aches and pains as well as arthritis pain. They have a variety of active ingredients, such as salicylate, capsaicin or menthol, which are applied directly to the skin. These creams are inexpensive and can be found in your local pharmacy. Try to thoroughly follow the directions for application.
  • Treat yourself to a full session with an experienced massage therapist. Try a sports, deep tissue or Swedish massage. Massages alleviate pain, increase muscle flexibility and improve circulation of the blood flow in our bodies. Choose a massage therapist that has a proven track record, as well as an extensive education. Need a referral  Contact me! Being in the spa industry 17+ years, I know many great therapists.
  •  Use a Jacuzzi to relieve muscle aches and pains. Jacuzzis, also known as hot tubs are designed to relax the muscles and relieve stress in the body. Jacuzzis are known as a type of hydrotherapy.
  • Stretch your muscles before and after exercising to minimize injury. If you are experiencing aches and pains after a challenging workout, try to stretch the muscles as often as possible. Stretching also improves your range of motion and stability.

Aloe Vera & Your Skin

After being at the beach all weekend I got a little more sun that I usually do. My shoulders and back went from a nice bronzy tan to a bright lobster red color. The first thing I did after taking a cold shower and rinsing away the sand was lather on aloe vera gel. Immediately, the heat from my shoulders and back were calmed down, soothed, and there was not as much discomfort. So why is aloe vera so good for sunburned skin? And what else is it good for?

The reason aloe vera is so healing on sunburn is because it has a cooling effect and provides a protective barrier over the skin to protect the burn.  Aloe is incredibly moisturizing (99% water) and has the ability to penetrate four times quicker than water alone. Aloe Vera is a cactus-like plant growing in the warmer climates of the world and are described as succulents. Aloe vera is a very popular herbal remedy.
